Laura Austin Reviews on books for Pregnancy and Beyond

Since I first discovered that I was expecting, I began devouring everything and anything I could get my hands on regarding pregnancy and childbirth. Some of the books I have found very helpful and enlightening. Other frightened me. Still others, I could hardly understand. Here is a short list of reviews of the books I have read. Remember, it is still under construction and will be updated frequently.

Highly Recommend

Active Birth: The New Approach to Giving Birth Naturally by Janet Balaskas. Foreword by Shelia Kitzinger, Introduction by Micheal Odent. I read the revised edition (copyright 1992) and was VERY impressed. Janet gives an incredible amount of information and makes you feel that childbirth truely is a natural event.

I recommend that you read it with New Natural Pregnancy, also by Janet Balaskas. Here she goes more into depth on different ways to make your pregnancy, labor, and delivery a little easier without extensive medical intervention.

Pretty Good- Recommend

Having Your Baby with a Nurse-Midwife: Everything you need to know to make an informed decision from the Professional Organization of Nurse Midwives, By the American College of Nurse-Midwives and Sandra Jacobs. This book was very informational, but I felt it gave the short end of the stick to direct entry midwives and homebirthers. However, I thought it was worth reading.

Wouldn't Read it Again
